Post  citlaja on Wed Feb 22, 2012 8:22 pm

I am fairly interested in Wicca and was wondering what are some good herbs/plants to have in my garden? <3 I am very new to all this so any help will be greatly appreciated!

Witchy Garden Tips

Post  Foolish Arachni on Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:28 pm

Hello Citlaja,
The first thing you want to do when considering gardening is to determine what kind of climate you live in, and what will grow in that area. You can also make a small greenhouse box if you want plants that normally grow in warmer climates, or if you want to grow spring/summer plants in winter & fall. Next is to decide how much and what space(s) you have available for planting. How much sunlight do these places get during the day? (Or you could look into planting a moon garden.) Also consider how much time you will have to take care of plants, and try to gauge how well you think you will remember to take care of them. Some plants are higher maintenance than others.
After you have determined these factors look around Wicca and other Neo-Pagan websites, or see if your local library has books on these topics. Even basic beginners books will often include a small list of flowers and herbs commonly used in witchcraft and rituals. Look up these plants online and research whether they will survive in your climate, and if you will be able to maintain upkeep of them.
Remember to consider whether to buy seeds or pre-potted plants, what you can afford, and how much space you have to plant them in. Will you need to plant new seeds each year (annuals)? Are they perennials that grow for many years (this will also reduce future costs)?
Some plants common in witches gardens are edible, and can be used in preparing foods, or herbal tinctures. Others are poisonous though, so make sure you know which are safe to consume and which aren't. If you have pets that will be near these plants, make sure none of plants could poison the kind of pet that you have. Some parts of the plant may been okay to eat (ex: rhubarb stems) while other parts are poisonous (ex: rhubarb leaves).
